A Few Tips Before You Start Drawing

  • The hair doesn’t need to be exactly how we do it. Feel free to experiment with it.

Let’s Draw A Cute Mermaid – Step By Step

Step 1: Draw a curved line going down. One on each side. Leave a small space between them on the bottom.

Step 2: Next, start in the top middle of the head and draw a line down on each side (follow arrows) to help form the front of the hair. Add a heart on one side as an accessory.
Note: You can change the heart to any other shape you’d like

Step 3: For this step, you’ll be drawing a “banana” shape which will help form the body and part of the tail.

Step 4: To help separate the body from tail, add a bit of detail around the waist-line and a few fins at the bottom.

Step 5: Add a little more detail to the tail and waist.

Step 6: Next, you can try adding a shell bikini-top with lines.

Step 7: For the arm/hand, draw the top line with thumb then skip to the bottom and draw another line and finish the hand.

Arms are thicker at the start and thin out near the hand.

It’s easier to control the thickness of the arm by drawing the top and then drawing another line on the bottom and connecting them at the hand.

Step 8: For this arm, draw a curved line with a soft top (to avoid a pointy elbow). You can add the hand detail and inside line after.

Step 9: The hair might look tricky but it’s just a bunch of wavy curved lines. Start at the top and go down & left. Have it touch the heart accessory then move it out and in and repeat.

Do the same thing for the other side except make the lines go out a bit further.

Step 10: We put the eyebrows over the hair. Leave a tiny white circle on the open eye. The rest of it can be colored black.

The closed eye is just like a crescent moon.

Finish off the other details. When adding the blush, you want to draw & color the circles with the blush color.

Step 11: This step is all about the last little details. We’ve added a few scales, a belly button and some bubbles.

Step 12: With all the details done, you should be ready to color. Copy ours or try your own color scheme out! We also have an alternate color style below. Great work!
